This Fanzine contains stories of disappearing communities and migration, told through Polaroid portraits and soundscape experience available through QR codes. Much like a road adventure, this project started on board of a van that has traveled through the villages around Casaletto Spartano, in the south of Cilento (Italy). With my vintage Land cameras and a worn-out backpack, in Cilento I found a world vanishing in modern times. Villages in this area suffer from severe depopulation and sometimes happen to be completely deserted. I captured the faces and listened to the voices of its last inhabitants. They are mostly men who left home to escape hunger and misery, who spent their whole lives abroad – always feeling like foreigners and dreaming of returning home one day. While they were away, villages were depopulating, communities were dissolving, schools and emporiums were closing, gardens were becoming wild, and houses were in ruins. When these migrants finally returned, the villages they remembered were gone. Despite that, they moved back and rebuilt their houses – becoming the last solitary guardians of a lost world.
