Italia Revisited, a complex work by Massimo Baldini, a long photographic narrative with respect to which one is tempted to launch into para-sociological interpretations aimed at explaining contemporary Italy, what it has become, how it has changed (and one can guess that the conclusion would be that it has changed for the worse, that it has lost its identity, that it has shattered painfully...). One can imagine that this would take place through an explanation derived from the images themselves, understood as themselves doing critical interpretive work, as a value judgment, as providing a strong, univocal interpretation – cutting, unquestionable images as precise and defined as words. But this is not so.
